Sleep Dealer “a fascinating dystopian Mexican movie”
By Alex Rivera
There were many sci-fi movies filmed in Mexico. Among these are David Lynch’s Dune and Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium. Also, there are new many famous actors of Mexican origins such as Salma Hayek (who played in the fantasies Tale of Tales, Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant) or Anthony Quinn (Treasure Island in Outer Space). Even so, I am not aware of many Mexican sci-fi movies or tv shows.
Sleep Dealer is the single Mexican science fiction I had the opportunity to watch. The movie imagines a dystopian future with a wall between Mexico and US. And this was in 2008! I found interesting the idea of Mexican people working remotely from Mexico for US corporations. They do this by controlling remotely robots on a construction site. While the execution could have been better, the movie has a lot of visionary elements.
